Though much of the information may seem familiar, there are surprising findings as well. It's eye-opening to see the effect that having children has on married couples. A British research study spanning 20 years has shown that couples without children tend to be happiest in their marriage. At the same time, of the American couples polled, 59 percent of them have cited having gotten married in order to have kids. 67 percent of couples in the study have mentioned that they had encountered a significant decline in marital happiness after their first child was born, with the greatest level of unhappiness occurring during the preschool years. Fortunately, their happiness level did return to what it was once their children matured into grown adults.
